So should it be the tiny Roger Vivier bag, a snip at £970, or the Balenciaga straw just £695?The cheap as chips Stella, meat-friendly, man-made shoe at £455, or the very reasonable Burberry pair at £950? Recession? What recession?

Must be the one that has brought out a rash of High Street dressing accessorised with bargain diamonds, (such a good investment opportunity) and rob a bank designer cool footwear plus deliberately clashing handbag. Yes, this summer the must have of every fashion editor is a little bit of Top Shop (preferably Mary Katrantzou) with a soupcon of vintage, a splash of ebay and an absolutely rude not to buy, but insanely priced, high end accessory.

Well let’s face it, the banks are not offering much interest on savings, and eating or paying the bills is so last season. Clearly the sensible move is to spend, spend, spend.

The least a girl can do in these difficult times is to adopt a suffering fashion designer, work long hours still earning last years pay, and then blow the lot on just a single luxury item. To avoid the distain of sales staff remember to make this worshipful pilgrimage, dressed head to toe in a kaleidoscope of unmatched fabric. Flowers and stripes for a feel good factor………….in silk……………obviously.

Texture is all.

Wear it, sit on it, or knit it.

Woollen texture is enjoying a buzz. From the high street to the designers atelier minimalism is on the wane. It’s been a long time coming but we now want colour, weave and nub. Is this a return to core values? Or an urge to nest in retreat from a difficult world? Knit one, pearl one, gives rise to feelings of nostalgia. I suggest we cast on, feet up, with a cup of English tea and a plate of biscuits. Makes a change from trawling the web.

wild Knitting circa 1970 something.

Rag and Bone winter 2011.

Big knits from Claire-Anne O’Brien.

Bowled over by Annette Bugansky’s ceramics.
